Meet Serdar Şişman: The Visionary Exterior Designer Behind Cosmo Marine’s Fleet

Serdar brings over 12 years of expertise in yacht design to the table. His creative and innovative approach has been instrumental in defining Cosmo Marine’s unique identity within the industry.

Could you tell us about your background and how you became interested in yacht design?

It was a moment that truly reflects life’s twists: becoming a yacht designer was never a deliberate thought for me. I first became familiar with yacht design during an internship, though I wasn't initially captivated by it. Even when the office wanted to hire me, I was determined that yacht design wasn't my path and decided to focus on my own projects. During my university years, I worked on various unique projects, including designing custom watches for a Swedish company.

However, as time passed, I found myself drawn back into the world of yachting through various product and vehicle design projects in collaboration with renowned firms. It seems designing yachts was my destiny after all! The awards and success I achieved in the industry further motivated me, becoming the greatest source of inspiration for my creative process. Today, we are actively working on yacht design projects without interruption while rapidly advancing our projects in various product design sectors. It’s truly been an adventure full of life's twists!

What are your sources of inspiration, and how have they shaped your design philosophy over the years?

As a designer, I draw inspiration from many sources. Sometimes it’s nature—the graceful lines of a dolphin or the sleek shape of a sailfish. Other times, it comes from architecture or automotive design, where many interesting forms and shapes can be adapted to yachting.

Over the years, my philosophy has evolved based on experience and observation. I believe a good yacht design should strike a balance between form and function, aesthetics and engineering. A yacht should not only look beautiful but also be practical, safe, and seaworthy. Designs should be tailored to the owner's needs and preferences while considering the industry's latest trends and technologies.

What methods do you use to create a unique, luxurious style that achieves a vision of timeless luxury?

To create a style that aligns with Cosmo Marine’s vision, I start by thoroughly understanding their brand identity and the values they seek to convey. This involves extensive research into their target market, competition, and industry trends to gain insight into what appeals to customers and sets them apart.

Once I have a clear understanding of the vision, I work to develop a concept that captures its essence. This involves exploring different themes, color schemes, and materials aligned with the image they want to project. Throughout the process, I prioritize attention to detail and quality, aiming to create a vessel that is beautiful, functional, comfortable, and durable. Beyond aesthetics, I prioritize practical considerations crucial to successful design, such as optimizing space utilization, integrating the latest technology, and ensuring safety and seaworthiness.

Can you tell us about the design process for the RHODEIA 125 exterior and the inspiration behind its elegant aesthetics?

The process for RHODEIA 125 began with a comprehensive analysis of Cosmo Marine’s market goals and the potential needs of clients. We considered the latest trends, technologies, and regulatory constraints to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Our key driver was the desire to create a sleek, modern, and timeless yacht with ample open space for entertainment and relaxation. The concept of fluidity and motion was a primary inspiration. We aimed to create a sense of movement and elegance reflected in the yacht's lines and surfaces. Its low, long, and wide profile gives it a sense of speed and agility, while soft curves and rounded corners add elements of sophistication.

How do you balance the needs for comfort, functionality, and aesthetics?

Balancing these three pillars is a critical part of the process. I usually start by considering the client’s preferences and the yacht’s intended use. This requires a deep understanding of layout, features, and amenities.

Regarding comfort, I focus on creating inviting, cozy spaces through the optimal use of volume, ergonomic principles, and high-quality finishes. We work closely with naval architects to prioritize space optimization, ensuring ample storage and incorporating cutting-edge technology to enhance performance and safety. Finally, aesthetically, I strive for designs that are both beautiful and timeless, focusing on classic elegance over fleeting trends.

How do you stay updated on design trends, and what are your favorite sources of inspiration?

Staying current is essential. I use various resources, including travel—exploring new cultures, architecture, and landscapes. I also attend yacht shows, design exhibitions, and industry events.

Additionally, I follow publications like Boat International, Yacht Style, Superyacht World, Robb Report, Trend Book, and Architectural Digest. Social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest also offer insight into the work of other creatives. However, one of the most important sources is the client. Each client has unique preferences, and I enjoy collaborating with them to create custom designs that reflect their lifestyle.

Can you share any unique features implemented on the Cruiser BLUE COSMO 52?

The BLUE COSMO 52 is an exceptional vessel. One of its most significant features, considering its size, is the internal layout. It offers cabin opportunities that many vessels of the same scale cannot, providing a master suite alongside guest cabins with private bathrooms and a spacious galley.

Its unique bow design incorporates wave-piercing characteristics for a smoother ride. To maintain this sleek shape, we designed a custom anchor handling system that stores the anchor internally. Furthermore, the aft section features folding bulwarks that expand the swim platform, creating a much larger and more ergonomic area at the water's edge.

What aspects of your exterior designs particularly appeal to the discerning tastes of high-profile clients?

Several aspects appeal to discerning clients. First, the exterior must exude elegance and luxury through flowing lines and high-quality materials. Another aspect is functionality; the design must be practical, allowing the owner and guests to enjoy the outdoors with ease through well-placed sun decks, dining areas, and strategic lighting. Finally, customization is key. High-profile clients often have specific requirements, and I work closely with them to ensure the final product exceeds their expectations.

How do you see the future of yacht exterior design evolving, and what role will technology play?

The future will continue to evolve in exciting ways, with technology playing an increasing role. We are seeing a major focus on sustainability and eco-friendly design, with growing demand for renewable energy sources and reduced emissions.

Another trend is the use of advanced materials like carbon fiber and 3D printing, which allow for lighter, more complex, and highly customized designs. I also anticipate greater integration of technology, including advanced automation, augmented reality displays, and smart controls for amenities.

In your opinion, what sets Cosmo Marine apart from other yacht builders?

Cosmo Marine sets itself apart through its unwavering commitment to excellence in every aspect of design and construction. I appreciate their willingness to work closely with designers and clients to create truly unique vessels. They understand that every client is different. Additionally, their emphasis on high-quality materials and innovative technology—incorporating the latest smart systems and controls—makes them a truly exceptional builder.

Do you have any exciting projects or design collaborations you can share?

While we often keep upcoming projects confidential to build anticipation, I can share that we are currently working on a new series of models ranging from 27m to 65m. In addition to our 24m Shadow project, we are developing two 30m and 32m concept models for special clients. We are also excited to announce our company's relocation to Europe—a challenging but energizing step for our future.
